Gadget: Invention, Travel, & Adventure Synergy Interactive1993This is a 1st person, point and click game considered to be Haruhiko Shono's masterpiece. The game is really a modern-day work of art and was way ahead of its time. From the strange mood music and realistic sound effects to the detailed atmospheric 3D settings and the haunted, disturbingly real-looking people (but with subtitles only: no voice, except for the introduction and ending), the story reminds you of one that is a cross between Jules Verne and George Orwell, and the game itself appears more modern in many respects than some of the newer releases today. It is the disturbing mood that the developer has managed to create in this game that really grabs you. As the game begins, you awaken in a hotel room feeling as if you're suffering from some illness that is affecting your mind, and you are not sure what is real. Meeting an enigmatic and somehow threatening man in the lobby who is apparently your boss, you are told that you are to contact an agent with the codename 'Horselover'. He is a member of a strange group of scientists being watched by the government and, at a secret research facility, he has been conducting mind-altering experiments and they have built a spaceship to escape. Ostensibly your world is about the be destroyed by a Comet, and you are the only one who can save it. Or is it really? Is this just a story that has been created by a fringe group for their own purposes? Or maybe it's just a figment of your own fevered, mind-altered imagination. To find out, you must travel deeper and deeper into their surrealistic world. You must race against time through abandoned and eerie train stations, talk with many obviously disturbed fellow travelers on those trains, stop at the Museum of Science and operate strange and powerful machines, and even pilot a monorail, airplane and spaceship yourself. And even when it is all over, will you really know the truth? labelimagesubject

The Magic Death: Virtual Murder 2  Creative Multimedia1993An anthropologist is found dead in her apartment as a sacrifice in a voodoo ritual. The Magic Death is the second entry in the Virtual Murder series of FMV murder mystery games. As in the previous title, the player has to solve the crime within a time limit of 5 hours. Time decreases when an action is performed (examining an object at the crime scene, watching a suspect's interview), the exception being a brief case summation that can be accessed and played without any penalty. After gathering enough evidence (stored automatically in the notebook area), the player can call a press conference and answer questions about the case. If this questionnaire is filled correctly, the game moves to its second level, where the player must present the case to the judge. labelimagesubject
The New Kid On The Block Brøderbund1993The fourth entry in the Living Books series written by Jack Prelutsky, this is a collection of 17 poems as opposed to the standard picture book adaptation usually seen in this series. Some of the poems included are "I Spied My Shadow Slinking" and "Homework! Oh, Homework!".

The game can be played in two modes, "Read to Me" and "Let Me Play." The former mode reads the poem all the way through, then lets the user either replay it or go the next one. The latter reads the poem by stanza. Once the stanza has been read through, the player can click on the picture and the words in the story for all sorts of reactions. Most of the time the animations will describe what the clicked on word means.

Who Killed Sam Rupert: Virtual Murder 1  Creative Multimedia1993Sam Rupert has been found dead in the resturant he owns. The police detectives arrive at the scene and must gather clues and solve the mystery to find out which one of 8 suspects might have killed Sam Rupert. Furthermore, since "most" crimes are solved within 6 hours, the city is demanding this case be wrapped up within that limit. Who Killed Sam Rupert is a multimedia full-motion-video detective game. Players assume the role of the investigating detective and must search the area, and zoom in, via a 1st person adventure game interface for clues and interview witnesses. Each action eats up a designated amount of time, and after 6 hours, the case is over and the player must explain what they've found at a press conference in order to get a chance at arresting the guilty party from a narrowed down list of 3 suspects. There are three possible "motives" for the case and thus three possible endings in solving the murder of Sam Rupert. labelimagesubject

Midnight Stranger Gazelle Technologies (Animatics Multimedia Corporation)1994This is the first of two published interactive multimedia CD-ROM based collaborations between writer and director Jeff Green and the Animatics Multimedia Corporation. Noted for its cinéma vérité style, it is a Point Of View (POV) video-based experiment in simulated socializing that takes place in an anonymous city late one night. Players navigate between several locations, and can interact with one or more people in each location to varying effects based on the player's "reactions" to that person. The main technical innovation of Midnight Stranger is its use of an emotional continuum Mood Bar for interaction with the in-story characters rather than a text interface or an itemized set of options for each interaction. The Mood Bar simulates some of the frustration and uncertainty when dealing with other people in social situations, and provides a more realistic role playing experience. labelimagesubject
Myst Mindscape;Brøderbund (Cyan Worlds;Red Orb Entertainment)1994Myst was the bestselling video game for several years, until The Sims exceeded its sales. Myst and its success had a significant impact on the first-person adventure game genre and was a showcase for many buyers of their first cd-rom drives. The story has you stumbling upon a most intriguing book, a book titled Myst. You have no idea where it came from, who wrote it, or how old it is. Reading through its pages provides you with only a superbly crafted description of an island world. As you reach the end of the book, you lay your hand on a page. Suddenly your own world dissolves into blackness, replaced with the island world the pages described. Now you're here, wherever here is, with no option but to explore. Myst is a first-person point-and-click adventure where the player controls a character known as The Stranger. Magically transported into the world described in the book, he needs to explore Myst Island and solve its mysteries. The game is presented as a series of scenes where the player acts with the environment by clicking and manipulating objects. There are no enemies and it is not possible to die. Through Myst Island, the game is further divided into mini-worlds set in different ages accessed through different books. Due to the game's popularity, many "Myst clones" came out after it and some adventure fans blame it for the death of the once traditional point-and-click adventure genre.***1995 French version.

A central part of the interface is the "decision star" which is used when interacting with other characters and has three options: "yes", "no" and "what". Depending on the answers, points are added or detracted (being a good person pays off) from the overall score points. Solving puzzles or finding clues also change the score.
